JJ72 was formed in 1996 by lead singer and songwriter Mark Greaney and drummer Fergal Matthews, while studying at Belvedere College, Ireland. The name 'JJ72' is rumoured to derive from a window at the College made from 72 jam jars. Their début single ‘October Swimmer’ was named 'Single of the Week' by BBC Radio 1 and they soon grew in popularity selling 500,000 copies of their self titled album in Ireland and received an Irish Music Award for 'Best New Band’.
