Macy Gray was first noticed while singing at jazz cafés around Los Angeles by Tom Carolan from Atlantic Records who signed her to the label. She began recording her debut record but was dropped from the label upon the departure of Carolan, forcing Macy back to her home town in Ohio. In 1998, she landed a record deal with Epic Records and began recording her debut album ‘On How Life Is’ released in the summer of 1999, which became a worldwide hit.
