"The Cans Festival" - Original
This rare, original Cans Festival Poster, was produced to promote the Cans Festival; an exhibition hosted by Banksy in May 2008, 'a street party for stencil art'.
The 'festival' took place in the Leake St tunnel beneath London Waterloo Station. The tunnel was closed off to the public at the beginning of May whilst Bansky and other street artists went about their work, a few days later the festival opened to the public who came in their thousands. Some of Banksy's murals at the festival were, 'Injured Buddha' and 'Graffiti Remover'. A 'temporary' Leake St cinema opened for Banksy's film, Exit Through The Gift Shop.
These rare, original promo posters are a vibrant, edgy representation of the event, the poster features a cowgirl seated on a saddle on top of a spray can rodeo style with a large splash of deep red paint running down the text.
Banksy was quoted in The Daily Telegraph as saying "Graffiti doesn't always spoil buildings, in fact, it's the only way to improve a lot of them. In the space of a few hours with a couple of hundred cans of paint, I'm hoping we can transform a dark forgotten filth pit into an oasis of beautiful art". The Cans Festival, breathed new life into Leake St Tunnel, it's now a legal graffiti space, offering events venues, restaurant,s and bars...it seems everything Banksy sprays turn gold. The poster captures the spirit of the festival and invites people to join in the celebration of street art and culture in a unique and exciting way.
This poster is an original promotional poster from 2008.
