The earlier tracks of the band feature genre-crossing stylings, distorted, morose, and at times alien lyrics, distinctive funk bass lines, and extensive use of lo-fi recording practices. 

These stylistic qualities are best exemplified in their 1998 debut album ‘How to Operate with a Blown Mind’, with the band members credited with pseudonyms rather than their real names - a practice kept up until their second studio album ‘Don’t Be Afraid of Love’ in 2002.
