Fronted by Scottish songstress Shirley Manson, alternative rock band Garbage formed in 1993 selling over 20 million records worldwide. Androgyny was the lead single from their third studio album Beautiful Garbage released in 2001, representing a shift in style by embracing current music elements into their repertoire.

Interscope Records partnered with web giants Yahoo! Messenger in promoting the release of 'Androgyny' to the US market as part of the launch of their new instant messenger initiative IMVironments, a Garbage-themed environment with the 'Androgyny' video and a link to purchase the new album through Yahoo! Music.
