Original Britpop posters: Oasis, Blur, Pulp and the 1990s shop window

Oasis poster - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Black duo set. Very Rare Originals

In the mid 1990s, British guitar music took over the charts, the music papers and the record shop windows. Every big release came with a promotional poster, and for a few weeks those posters were everywhere. The originals that survive are a snapshot of the most exciting few years in British pop.

Why Britpop posters are special

Britpop was a visual movement as much as a musical one. Record companies spent heavily on campaigns, and the artwork (sleeve designs, band shots, bold typography) was built to stand out in a shop window. Those posters were made for the moment and taken down when the next release arrived, which is why clean originals are now hard to find.

The big names

  • Oasis. From Definitely Maybe to the Knebworth weekend in 1996, Oasis defined the era. Our Oasis collection is the largest part of our stock.
  • Blur. The other side of the most famous chart battle of the decade, when Blur's Country House beat Oasis's Roll With It to number one in August 1995.
  • Pulp. Different Class made Pulp one of the biggest bands in the country. Our Pulp posters include the You Can't Buy Happiness collectors set.
  • Paul Weller and Ocean Colour Scene. The mod-rooted side of the scene, and a big influence on the bands that followed.

Beyond the headliners

Some of the best posters come from the bands around the edges: Supergrass, Ash, Cast, Kula Shaker, Echobelly, The Bluetones, Space, Northern Uproar, Mansun, The Charlatans and Richard Ashcroft's solo years. These were printed in smaller numbers than the big releases, and many have not been seen for sale for years.

Building a Britpop wall

A few ideas that work well:

  1. The 1995 wall. Oasis, Blur and Pulp posters from the same year side by side.
  2. One label, one look. Posters from the same record label often share a design style and hang together naturally.
  3. Big and small. One 60 x 40 inch outdoor poster as a centrepiece, surrounded by 30 x 20 inch record shop posters.

Most of our Britpop posters are about 30 x 20 inches, which suits standard frames and most walls. You can add a frame or hanging rails on any poster's page.

Originals only, unless we say otherwise

Everything in our Britpop collection is from the original print runs, apart from a small number of first-generation reprints that say so clearly in the title.
