You got a friend in me is a single from the Shelter album by the Brand New Heavies released in 1997.

Shelter is the only album by the group which includes Siedah Garrett who joined the Brand New Heavies in 1996, but left in 1998 to concentrate on her own songwriting.

"You've Got a Friend" was originally made famous by James Taylor and was the group's only top 10 hit single in the UK. The singlr did not appear on the initial pressings of the US version but was added later after their label Delicious Vinyl secured distribution from Bertelsmann Music Group.

The album also contained the hits "Sometimes", "You Are the Universe" and "Shelter" which reached positions of #11, #21 and #31 respectively in the UK Singles Chart.
